Scutellaria baicalensis and Glycyrrhiza uralensis for treating infantile diarrhe
Indications: Clears heat, dispels pathogens, astringes the intestines, and stops diarrhea. Indicated for infantile autumn diarrhea. Cases typically occur during the late autumn to early winter epidemic period, presenting with fever (38–39.5°C), upper respiratory infections, abdominal pain, yellow-green watery or egg-drop-like stools (10+ to dozens of times daily), vomiting, and restlessness.
Herbal Formula:
Scutellaria baicalensis (黄芩) 10g
Paeonia lactiflora root (白芍) 10g
Glycyrrhiza uralensis (甘草) 6g
Roasted Pueraria lobata root (煨葛根) 10g
Saposhnikovia divaricata (防风) 10g
Charred Atractylodes macrocephala (焦白术) 12g
Charred Hordeum vulgare (焦麦芽) 10g
Prunus mume (乌梅) 6g
Citrus reticulata peel (陈皮) 1g
Fresh ginger (生姜) 3 slices
Jujube (大枣) 5 pieces
Administration: Decoct in water. Administer in divided doses, one dose daily.
Case Study:
Sun, male, 7 months old. Presented with fever, egg-drop-like stools (10+ times/day), restlessness, temperature of 39.5°C, irritability, reduced urination, red tongue with yellow coating, purple-stagnant finger venules. Stool test: yellow-green watery stools.
Western diagnosis: Autumn diarrhea.
TCM diagnosis: Diarrhea (Xie Xie).
Administered the formula once after each bowel movement. After 2 doses, fever subsided, and bowel movements reduced. Continued with 2 more doses; all symptoms disappeared, stools normalized.
